We Will Remember The Movie Name For You Wholesale

When I recall, even vaguely, a movie or series that I watched but whose name I don't know, my OCD will torture me until I find out what it's called.

These as-yet-nameless movies form a list: my kill list. It is comprised exclusively of movies I watched in my childhood/youth, i.e. before the late 90s. Reason being that, as soon as I learned that I could use IMDb to track what I watch, I was on it like flies on shit. This explains why I have 4000+ movies logged on Letterboxd and why I started a Letterboxd for my daughter as soon as she was old enough to watch TV.

Need To Know movie name

Thanks to hours on IMDb (remember its outstanding Need To Know message board?), Google-Fu, some help using AI, and requests on forums like Reddit’s TipOfMyTongue, yesterday I finally managed to cross off the penultimate item on the list. These are some memorable items from my kill list:

Strongroom (1962) British crime

Parker Kane (1990) Action crime

Offspring (1996) steamy Ozploitation

Gordian The Warrior (1979) super robot mecha anime

The White Whale of Mu (1980) sci-fi anime

Manga Mito Komon (1981) jidaigeki anime

And this, my dear friends, is the very last remaining item:

1990s North American production. Thriller/police procedural. TV movie or at most straight-to-video, definitely not a theatrical release.

The main character is a tall, white male detective in his 40s with prematurely grey hair. His detective partner is a black male also in his 40s. Before the climax, the main character finds his black partner dead.

The next part I'm sure of: the climax occurs in an American diner. The detective realizes the villain is sitting 2 tables behind him, because the villain is wearing in-ear headphones connected to a cassette tape that played into a mobile phone to confuse the police about his location. The cop turns suddenly and they both draw guns; the villain is shot a couple of times and dies.

The overall vibe reminded me of the Dr. Zito episodes in MacGyver, wasn't too violent.

Kindly message me if you have an inkling of what it could be.

CASE STATUS: Still unsolved.
